You will be responsible for, but not limited to:
- Play a key role in driving the food safety culture programme, promoting compliance, accountability, and a quality mindset to prevent process deviations affecting safety, quality, and legality. Actively contribute to programme development, including site culture events.
- Manage the QA team, working closely with all functions to embed a QA mindset and quality culture. Inspire, train, and mentor team members to develop future QA leaders. Regularly assess performance, effectiveness, and output, implementing improvement plans as necessary.
- Work alongside the Senior Technical Management Team and Technical Compliance Manager to maintain and implement industry-leading standards, procedures, policies, and recording mechanisms, ensuring compliance with current regulations, legislation, and codes of practice.
- Support the Technical Compliance Manager in preparing and leading third-party and customer audits, driving corrective action completion and ensuring the effectiveness of preventative measures.
- Collaborate with the Technical and Operations teams to identify and address non-conformances, ensuring true root cause analysis and the implementation of robust, long-term corrective and preventative actions.
- Continuously improve quality standards through ongoing QA audits and assessments, ensuring defined KPIs and customer expectations are exceeded.
- Supervise QA activities across the facility, ensuring high standards of GMP and system compliance. Identify and rectify non-compliance, escalating and recording issues as appropriate.
- Act as a key member of the HACCP team, ensuring all areas of HACCP compliance are met.
- Identify and review trends related to quality and compliance, ensuring accurate reporting and regular discussion in appropriate forums. Implement corrective actions to address key concerns.
- Play a critical role in technical incident management at the site level when necessary.
- Validate and verify product compliance, safety, and legality, ensuring daily paperwork, legal process checks (e.g., weight control, recipe validation), and microbiological/environmental sample collection and submission are completed.
- Manage the Environmental Monitoring and Listeria Management programmes with a proactive "seek and destroy" approach, ensuring robust corrective and preventative actions. Continuously drive compliance and excellence in this area.
- Ensure adherence to all testing and auditing schedules, including microbiological, allergen, authenticity, and other audits. Manage external laboratories, trend data, and identify areas for improvement.
- Oversee customer complaint management, supporting operational teams in thorough investigations, root cause analysis, and CAPA implementation. Ensure timely customer responses.
- Manage pest control contractors and programmes, coordinating visits and ensuring appropriate corrective actions following inspections.
- Ensure thorough assessment of raw material intake against known standards and drive improvements to processes.
- Adhere to policies and procedures relevant to site operations and the working environment.
- Collaborate with Senior Technical Management, Commercial, Procurement, and other teams to achieve business objectives.
- Undertake additional duties as required to support operations.
What's required?
- Degree in Food Science (or equivalent) with experience at a mid/senior Technical level.
- Proven experience in managing a team within a fast-paced food environment, ensuring performance and budgetary targets are met.
- Enthusiastic, self-motivated, and committed to continuous improvement with a passion for food safety and quality.
- Experience in RTC/RTE manufacturing, including protein-based ready meals, high-care, or high-risk categories.
- In-depth knowledge of BRCGS global standards and customer COPs, with the ability to translate compliance requirements into factory-friendly processes.
- Experience handling UK retailer audits, completing corrective actions, and leading effective RCA/CAPA.
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to support and inspire teams while meeting operational demands.
- Food Safety Level 4, HACCP Level 3, and Internal Auditing qualifications, with a strong understanding of food microbiology.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and build strong relationships with internal teams, customers, and suppliers.
- Detail-oriented, proactive, and capable of managing multiple simultaneous projects at a fast pace.
- Ability to balance daily production needs with long-term QA/Technical objectives.
- Leads by example, setting high operational standards and fostering teamwork and feedback.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
